GEOFF LEES TROPHY FORMULA 2
The F2 are back !
There is no doubt that this will be the event of this Grand Prix de Pau Historic vintage 2020 !
Under the title of “Geoff Lees Trophy” (from the name of the former British champion winner of the Pau GP in 1981), this starting grid initiated by the famous English club HSCC will confirm the return of the single-seaters of Formula 2 to the city of Pau. The real forerunner of Formula 1 in its time, this category is inseparable from the best hours of Pau’s Grand Prix, of which it was the unbeatable star for 2 decades, from the mid-60’s to the mid-80’s. In addition to these Formula 2 cars from before 1985, powered by 1600 or 2 litre engines, this grid of single seaters will also host many Formula 3 cars from after 1985, as a perfect complement to the other F3 classic races dedicated to older cars.
At the turning point of the 50’s and 60’s
Like last year, the Historical Grand Prix will give the public the opportunity to admire the multiple aspects of the single-seaters of the Formula Junior.
This universal category, introduced in 1958, lived glorious times until 1963 when we saw its replacement the following year by the new classifications F3 and F2. During this brief period, all of the future great champions were revealed driving these frail single seaters, with an engine of 1000 or 1100 cm3, especially conceived in the workshops of Cooper, Lotus, Lola or Brabham. In its six years of existence, this category symbolized the rapid technical evolution of the time, in particular the transition from the front engine to the rear engine on all of the single-seaters of the period. As always, drivers will come from all over Europe to take part in this double Formula Junior race.
TROPHEE F3 AND FORMULA RENAULT CLASSIC
In the wake of the greatest
Introduced in 1964 and for a long time inseparable from the Grand Prix de Pau, the Formula 3 rises from these emblematic categories and today we like to relive the best sequences in historical mode.
The F3 Classic Trophy, being familiar to the béarnaise city of Pau, takes on this mission by offering the public the opportunity of seeing many of these single-seaters in action. More particularly, those of the 70s / 80s (before 1986), produced at the time by famous specialized names such as Martini, March, Ralt, Chevron or Brabham for the benefit of future big stars in motorsport. So many old F3s from Mansell, Prost, Berger, Alboreto, De Angelis, Pirro (among others) that continue to race in their original livery today. This year’s two races will also be open to the equally attractive Formula Renault single-seaters from pre-1995.
CHALLENGE FORMULA FORD HISTORIC
In the tracks of Ayrton Senna
The global history of Formula Ford is so rich that it can be retold in a thousand ways.
As part of the “Historic” Challenge, the focus is on the oldest of them, namely single-seaters from a period running from the start of the category, in 1967, to the year 1981, with all that this implies in the variety of the chassis brands. The most recent of them are not necessarily the most sought after by pilots, who are above all concerned with the rarity of their single-seaters or, better still, the celebrity of the champions who had the opportunity to drive them. Ayrton Senna himself was one of them! All of these cars have in common a Ford Kent engine coupled to a Hewland gearbox and they can therefore produce very close performances. The public is assured exceptionally hot races !
MAXI 1300 SERIES AND GROUP 1
The pocket-size race
The Maxi 1300 Series reconnects with this blessed time when small-cylindered racing cars could take center stage.
It’s in this register of popular small sports that the starting grid in question has forged its success for more than two decades. All cars under 1,300 cm3 from the 60s and 70s can now find the material to take on the leading roles, led by the still so gallant Mini Cooper S, Alpine A110, Austin 1275 GT, Simca Rallye 2, Mini Marcos, Simca CG, Matra Djet and other mini hot-blooded racing cars. As in previous historic Grand Prixs, their confrontation promises to be colourful on this circuit of Pau city where the cramped and tormented layout seems to have been designed for them! As last year, the starting grid will further gain in diversity by also opening up to former Group 1 sedans from the Iberian Peninsula.
HISTORIC ENDURANCE PRE 76 GT
A page in history of crews
It is impossible to refer to the best hours of car racing without conjuring up the magic of endurance.
This very international line-up, dedicated to the GT and so-called tourism cars from before 1976 and to the small prototypes of design from before 1966, pays tribute to this previous chapter from history. As in earlier editions, it pulls together again more than 40 vintage cars, the majority of which are from the Iberian Historic Endurance Championship. From Jaguar type E, Ferrari 365 GTB, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette, Morgan Plus 8, Alfa Roméo GTA and other Porsche 356 and 911 with all cylinder capacity, like the frail prototypes of the 60s of Elva or Lotus with their drivers boldly competing against each other in the labyrinth of Pau’s streets. As this has regularly been the case since 2014, this line up should find everyone of unanimous cheer in the grandstands.
YOUNGTIMERS GTI CUP ET ROADSTER PRO CUP
The « GTI » generation is back in force
For its first time appearance in the streets of Pau, this starting grid, originating from the Historic Tour, will steal the show with its famous generation of « GTI » so fondly remembered by so many spectators.
Invited by the Youngtimers GTI Cup, it will be a pleasure to see in action again the many sports models from before 1991 (under 2 litres) that marked the era, such as the R5 GT Turbo, Peugeot 205 GTI and 309 GTI, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Honda Civic, etc. These cars will take their place on the track in perfect harmony with their fellow motors from the Roadster Pro Cup. Alongside this monotype Cup created in 2017, one model alone will be displayed. And what a model : the irresistible little Mazda MX-5 (in its original version from the beginning of the 90s), with a planetary success has climbed to the heights of a true icon. Once again the double race of the weekend promises to be very exciting.
LEGENDS CARS CUP
With more than 15 years of experience, and almost as many times a participation in Pau’s Grand Prix, the Legends Car Cup is as attractive as ever.
As attractive for the drivers as for the spectators, fans of these hotly contested races, where even in Pau, setting new records is always possible.
Characterized by their reduced size and large wheels, the Legends Cars offer top performance, boosted by their featherweight stature propulsed by a motorcycle engine. Since 2019, the engine has changed though. Make way for the modern Yamaha FZ09, a 900 cc liquid-cooled injection delivering 140 hp. Two race formats are maintained on the same meeting : two 20-minute sprints and a 40-minute endurance which allows two drivers to share the same car even if more and more are racing alone. Three rankings make the Legends Cars Cup even more attractive : Elite, Elite Pro and the Feminine.
